Breaking News...
AVP Ceases Operations
Friday the 13th certainly lived up to its' name.
The AVP suspended operations Friday, with seven of 12 events played in its 23rd season.
The shutdown was not unexpected and followed a scramble for investors by the cash-strapped AVP, which was created as a players' association in 1983 and first ran a U.S. tour in 1988.
The AVP's Al Lau broke the news via a conference call that operations were being suspended effective immediately, and the rest of the season was canceled. Last minute nogotiations to obtain sufficient financing via sponsors fell through.
The Manhattan Beach Open will be operated by the city and the CBVA. Other local promoters may follow suit and hold events without the AVP.
Cincinnati will definitely hold a tournament over Labor Day weekend at the all new Hahana Beach facility according to Bob Slattery or Reach Event Marketing. For more information on the Cincinnati Tournament of Champions over Labor Day weekend, please go here for more information.
The Barefoot Wine AVPNext National Championship event will be held as scheduled, albeit without the involvement of the AVP. Kudos to Barefoot for honoring their commitment to the players and promoters.
Hans Stolfus wrote about his last day at the AVP on his blog.
